Chinese Herbs have been used for over three thousand years for the treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, for balancing mental and emotional health, for eliminating pain and other symptoms, and for the preservation and restoration of health.
The use of Chinese Herbs has spread all over the world. Today, through clinical use, classical study, and scientific research, Chinese Herbal Medicine has become a very complex and sophisticated healing modality.
The basic Chinese Herbs used regularly in practice number between 200 and 700, dependent on the practitioner. The majority of Chinese Herbs come from plant sources, and the rest are from animal and mineral sources.
Chinese Herbs are used in their whole form. They have not had specific chemicals extracted in proportions that are different from what is found in their natural form.

All Chinese Herbs are divided into different categories based on their therapeutic functions. Individually, each Chinese Herb performs a unique set of functions within the body. Occasionally, single Chinese Herbs are prescribed by themselves to treat simple illnesses. However, several Chinese Herbs are often combined into a complex formula to treat the unique nature of each individual's illness.
Chinese Herbal formulas are generally comprised of 4-18 different medicinal substances. Single Chinese Herbs are combined to influence disharmonies within many different parts of the body simultaneously, while minimizing any potential side-effects.
Chinese Herbs are added to formulas to relieve symptoms and to correct the root imbalance that caused the symptoms to manifest. Formulas are prescribed based upon a patient’s pattern diagnosis according to Chinese medical theory.
Chinese medicine does not treat an illness with pre-designed protocols. Instead, a practitioner uses Chinese Herbs to treat the unique imbalances presented within each patient that has caused their illness to arise in the fist place. This is called “treating the root while treating the branches”.
